Disney Princess Movies pin

You can never go wrong with a Disney movie but Disney princess movies are definitely our favorites. From Snow White to Moana, here's the full list of Disney princess movies, plus some cool fun facts too!

All the Disney Princesses

If there's one thing my girls and I love, it's the Disney princesses! We've seen the movies more times than we can count and and never get tired of them.

My favorite Disney princess movie will forever be Beauty And The Beast, though Moana is a close second. Maybe it's the story, maybe it's the music, but I never get tired of watching it. I was even lucky enough to meet Paige O'Hara, a.k.a. Belle, on a Disney cruise a few years ago!

Snow White with apple

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs is the movie that got the whole princess train rolling. Based on a German fairy tale from the Brother's Grimm, it was Walt Disney's first full length animated feature film and was a huge success at the box office.

This classic film tells the story of Snow White, a princess whose father died and left her in the care of her evil stepmother (a.k.a. The Evil Queen). Jealous of her beauty, the queen unsuccessfully tries to have Snow White killed before she runs off to live with the seven dwarfs and eventually find true love.

Fun Facts:

  • The original version of the Brother's Grimm story didn't even have a name. It was simply titled Tale 53.
  • Just 14 years old, Snow White is the youngest of all the Disney princesses.
  • The movie earned a unique Academy Award that was made specifically for the occasion. It was a regular sized Oscar statue that sat on a base alongside seven miniature statuettes.

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

  • Release Date TBD – Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (Live Action)
Princess Cinderella in blue dress

Cinderella (1950)

The next Disney princess movie to be released was Cinderella in 1950. Based on the French version of the book Cendrillon by Charles Perrault, it tells the story of a young girl who is raised by her wicked stepmother and stepsisters after her father dies.

Cinderella's cruel stepmother makes things pretty tough for her. Luckily, with the help of her fairy godmother, she goes to the royal ball, meets a handsome prince and (spoiler alert) lives happily ever.

Though Snow White was a huge success, the Disney films following it were box office failures and the studio was in debt. Cinderella was the movie that turned things around. Not only was it a financial success but it was nominated for three academy awards as well.

Fun Facts:

  • If you don't count the prologue at the very beginning and the wedding at the end, the events of the movie take place over a 24 hour period.
  • In the movie, the prince is never actually called Prince Charming. He's not referred to by name at all.
  • Cinderella loses her shoe more than once in the film. Besides losing it when she runs from the ball, she also loses a shoe delivering breakfast trays and as she's going down the steps on her wedding day.

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

  • 2002 – Cinderella II: Dreams Come True (Animated)
  • 2007 – Cinderella III: A Twist In Time (Animated)
  • 2015 – Cinderella (Live Action)
Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Nine years after Cinderella, Walt Disney Animation Studios released the classic, Sleeping Beauty. Also based on a story by Charles Perrault, it tells the story of Princess Aurora (a.k.a. Briar Rose).

Everything seems to be going smoothly at Aurora's christening until the evil Maleficent shows up, Insulted that she wasn't invited. She retaliates by putting a curse on the baby princess. On her 16th birthday, Aurora will fall into a deep sleep that can only be broken by true love's kiss.

Though Princess Aurora is the main character, this movie also gave us one of the most popular Disney villains of all time, Maleficent.

Fun Facts:

  • Eleanor Audley, the voice of Maleficent, also voiced Lady Tremaine in Cinderella.
  • Aurora has the fewest lines of any Disney princess.
  • As the fairies bake cookies and discuss how to help the king and queen, look closely at the cookies. You may just see a hidden Mickey!

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

  • 2014 – Maleficent
  • 2019 – Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil
Princess Ariel with tail

The Little Mermaid (1989)

After Sleeping Beauty, 30 years went by before Disney made any more Disney princess films. The Little Mermaid came along in 1989 and marked the beginning of what's been called the Disney Renaissance.

Inspired by the classis fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, it tells the story of the mermaid Ariel, who longs to have legs, live on land and marry the prince of her dreams.

Fun Facts:

  • The tails of Ariel and her sisters represent the colors of the rainbow.
  • Look closely at the scene where King Triton arrives at the arena. You may just see Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and though it seems a bit random, Kermit The Frog.
  • The pink dress that Ariel wears to dinner was inspired by all the princesses that came before her. It has the poofy sleeves from Snow White's dress, the pink color from Cinderella's first dress and the skirt and draping from Cinderella's ball gown. Finally it has the off-the-shoulder top with long pointy sleeves from Aurora's dress.

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

  • 1992-1994 – The Little Mermaid television series
  • 2000 – The Little Mermaid II: Return To The Sea (Animated)
  • 2008 – The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning (Animated)
  • 2019 – The Little Mermaid Live (Television Special)
  • Release Date TBD – The Little Mermaid (Live Action Film)
Belle from Beauty And The Beast

Beauty And The Beast (1992)

After The Little Mermaid, Disney totally outdid themselves with Beauty And The Beast! Based on the French fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Laprince de Beaumont, it was a huge success at the box office. It was also the first animated movie to be nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Picture category.

Beauty And The Beast tells the story of Belle, who dreams of a life beyond her small village. She gets a different kind of adventure when she's captured by a hideous beast, though later learns that things aren't always as they seem.

Fun Facts:

  • The scene at the end of the movie where Belle dances with Prince Adam is actually animation lifted from Sleeping Beauty. Animators didn't have time to draw the scene from scratch so they superimposed Belle and Prince Adam over Sleeping Beauty and Prince Phillip instead.
  • Though never mentioned in the movie, the Beast's real name is Prince Adam.
  • As Paige O'Hare was auditioning, she kept pushing back a strand of hair that was falling in her face. Animators decided to incorporate that into Belle's character and you can see her doing it several times on screen.

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

  • 1997 – Beauty And The Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (Animated)
  • 1998 – Beauty And The Beast: Belle's Magical World
  • 2017 – Beauty And The Beast (Live Action)
  • Release Date TBD – Untitled Beauty And The Beast Gaston Prequel (Disney+ Streaming Series)
Princess Jasmine from Aladdin

Aladdin (1992)

The next movie in the Disney Princess series is Aladdin, based on old the Arabic folk tale. This movie was both a commercial and critical success and went on to become the highest grossing animated film of 1992.

Aladdin is as much of a main character in this movie as Princess Jasmine. He's a poor street urchin that like many Disney characters, dreams of a better life. He meets Jasmine but is convinced that without money, he has no chance. Aladdin decides to enlist the help of an over the top Genie and masquerades as a wealthy prince. The plan backfires at first but in the end, true love wins out.

Fun Facts:

  • Robin Williams, voice of the Genie, improvised so much that by the time they were finished, there was almost 16 hours worth of material.
  • Early versions of the Aladdin character had him resembling Michael J. Fox. However, then Disney head Jeffrey Katzenberg wanted him to be more appealing to the ladies so they used Tom Cruise as inspiration instead.
  • There is a big purple feather on Aladdin's turban that falls in his face whenever he tells a lie.

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

  • 1994 – The Return Of Jafar (Animated)
  • 1996 – Aladdin And The King Of Thieves (Animated)
  • 2019 – Aladdin (Live Action)
  • Release Date TBD – Aladdin 2 (Live Action Film)
Pocahontas

Pocahontas (1995)

Released in 1995, Pocahontas was the first Disney princess based on an actual person (though some liberties were taken with the story). It told the story of a forbidden romance between a young Native American princess and her relationship with English soldier John Smith and the settlers who arrived with him.

Fun Facts:

  • This movie was released on the 400th anniversary of the year Pocahontas was born.
  • Pocahontas is one of only two Disney princesses to be born in America. The other is Tiana.
  • Pocahontas is the only official Disney princess with a tattoo.

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

1998 – Pocahontas 2: Journey To A New World (Animated)

Disney Princess Mulan

Mulan (1998)

In this story, based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, Mulan is a young girl whose aging father is called to war against the Huns. Worried that he'd never survive, she disguises herself as a man to take his place and ultimately becomes a hero.

Fun Facts:

  • Mulan was the first Disney princess to not actually be a princess. She wasn't born or married into royalty.
  • This movie was Disney's first ever princess movie to be released on DVD.
  • Mulan is one of only two Disney princesses to wear pants, with Princess Jasmine being the other. Princess Raya wears pants as well but is not yet on the official list of princesses.

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

  • 2004 – Mulan II (Animated)
  • 2020 – Mulan (Live Action)
Tiana from The Princess And The Frog

The Princess And The Frog (2009)

Disney Princess Tiana made her debut in the movie The Princess And The Frog. Loosely based on the Brothers Grimm tale The Frog Prince, it's the first Disney movie to feature an African-American princess.

The film tells the story of a young woman from New Orleans who wants to own a restaurant one day. However, somewhere along the line she kisses a frog (Prince Naveen) and instead of the frog turning back into a prince, Tiana turns into a frog also. Together they must make their way through the bayou to find a cure.

Fun Facts:

  • This was the first Disney musical since Beauty And The Beast in which each actor did both the speaking and singing parts for their character.
  • At the beginning of the song "Down In New Orleans", a character shakes a carpet out the window. If you look closely, you'll see it's the flying carpet from Aladdin.
  • Louis the alligator was named in honor of jazz great Louis Armstrong.

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

  • 2022 – Tiana (Disney+ Streaming Series)
Rapunzel from the Disney princess movie Tangled

Tangled (2010)

This movie was also adapted from a Brother's Grimm story. Originally titled Rapunzel, Disney changed the name to Tangled in hopes that it would appeal more to all genders. It must have worked because it became Disney's most successful animated film since The Lion King.

The Disney film Rapunzel tells the story of a young girl who is kidnapped by Mother Gothel for her magical hair. She's kept locked in a tower until her 18th birthday, until she finally escapes with a little help from Flynn Rider.

Fun Facts:

  • This was the first princess movie to get a PG rating instead of a G, due to brief mild violence.
  • Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell both auditioned for the roll of Rapunzel but lost out to Mandy Moore. Both were later cast as Elsa and Anna in Frozen.
  • Tangled cost $260 million dollars to film, making it Disney's most expensive animated movie.

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

  • 2012 – Tangled Ever After (Animated Movie Short)
  • 2017 – Tangled: Before Ever After (Animated)
  • 2017-2020 – Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure (Television Series)
Princess Merida from Brave

Brave (2012)

Set in the Scottish Highlands, Brave was the first Disney Pixar movie to give us a princess with an accent. Headstrong Princess Merida decides to buck ancient traditions, which in turns wreaks havoc throughout her kingdom. Don't worry, it all gets worked out in the end!

Fun Facts:

  • Merida is the first Disney princess that doesn't sing. It was also the first not to have a love interest, focusing instead on the mother/daughter relationship.
  • Look closely in the witches hut and you'll see a carving the Pizza Planet truck from Toy Story. It's seen at some point in almost every Pixar movie.
  • In order to draw the fight scenes, the animators had to first learn all the choreography themselves.

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

Brave is one of the few Disney princess movies with no sequels or spinoffs.

Moana

Moana (2016)

The movie Moana takes us to the South Pacific island of Motunui, where we meet the chief's daughter. Moana wants nothing more than to sail away and navigate the world. When her island faces imminent danger, she does just that, sailing off on an epic journey in hopes of saving the day.

Fun Facts:

  • Auli'i Cravalho (Moana) and Dwayne Johnson (Maui) didn't meet until they were completely finished voicing the movie.
  • When Maui gets his hook back and starts to shape shift, look closely and you'll seem him briefly turn into Sven from Frozen.
  • According to Lin Manuel Miranda, Tamatoa the Crab was inspired by rocker David Bowie.

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

  • 2017 – Gone Fishing (Animated Short)
  • 2023 – Moana (Disney+ Streaming Series)
Raya from Raya And The Last Dragon

Raya And The Last Dragon (2021)

Raya And The Last Dragon is the most recent addition to the list of Disney princess movies. It's not official yet but Raya is expected to be added to the Disney princess lineup at some point.

Raya And The Last Dragon tells the story of Raya, whose kingdom is in danger from evil spirits known as the Druun. In order to save the land of Kumandra, she must track down the last dragon so the powerful dragon gem can be restored.

Fun Facts:

  • Raya is Disney's first Southeast Asian princess.
  • Raya is the second Disney princess not to sing in her movie. The first was Merida.
  • Namarri's facial features were intentionally designed to look like a fierce cat or tiger.

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

  • Since this movie is so recent, there's no word yet on any sequels or spinoffs (but you'll be the first to know if I hear anything).
Anna and Elsa from Frozen

Honorable Mention: Frozen (2013)

Surprising as it seems, Anna and Elsa are not official Disney princesses. In fact, Elsa is Queen Elsa though her little sister is still Princess Anna.

In this story, Elsa gets upset and accidentally uses her magic to freeze the town of Arendelle. Her sister Anna then teams up with the scruffy Kristoff, his reindeer and the snowman Olaf to find Elsa and convince her to hit the defrost button.

Fun Facts:

  • Look closely during the song "For The First Time In Forever" and you'll see Rapunzel and Flynn Rider when the gates open.
  • Say the names Hans, Kristoff, Anna and Sven quickly and it almost sounds like you're saying Hans Christian Andersen.
  • You can determine Elsa's mood by the color of her castle. If it's blue, she's happy. If it's red, she's scared. Stay away if it's yellow though…that means she's angry.

Sequels, Spinoffs & More

  • 2015 – Frozen Fever (Animated Short)
  • 2019 – Frozen II
